Surviving January

Does it feel like we’re 55 days into January instead of just a quarter through? That’s how I feel it.

January often arrives with a mix of emotions. Lights are taken down, the Christmas tree is out, the holiday jolly has come to an end, and the cold weather can feel neverending. I won’t even mention the money issue. Most people get paid before Christmas, and they need to be wise in budgeting everything for almost a month and a half.

As we transition from the warmth of December into the brisk reality of January, it’s common for many to experience what is colloquially known as the “January blues.” However, with a proactive mindset and a few strategic approaches, you can not only survive but thrive during this chilly start to the year.

Before I carry on, I feel the need to mention that firstly, I write this article for me. Second, this is a reminder that no matter how stuck you may feel, nothing lasts forever, and brighter days are just around the corner. And I am not saying this lightly or from a place of exaggerated positivity.

So, how do we cope with winter?

  1. Enjoy the ”winter wonderland” engage in activities like ice skating, snowboarding, skiing, having hot tea in your hand, and creating a cosy space around you. While things look different this year for us, our January tradition is that at the end of the month we go somewhere abroad. For many years, this gave me something to look forward to.
  2. Set realistic goals – The beginning of the year often comes with a wave of resolutions and ambitious goals. While setting objectives for the year is to be admired, it’s crucial to be realistic. Break down your goals into manageable steps and focus on small, achievable tasks.
  3. Prioritize Self-Care: oh, I mention this so much. Self-care looks different to most of us. For me self, self-care is going for a walk while listening to my favourite song; for you, it might be a nice dinner out or a long bubble bath session. Write about your day, and list things you are thankful for, pray, and be active. Read a book! Find that gym!
  4. Stay connected – If you’re an extroverted introvert like me, some days it’s easy to connect with the people you love, while on other days, it can feel like you don’t know how to talk to anyone, and all you want is to be at home. However, no matter how we feel, let’s try to spend time with friends and family, either in person or virtually.
  5. Plan activities that bring you joy – today, for example, I am meeting my friend for brunch in London, and later, I am going to a concert. Little things that add to the moments of our days.

That being said, it’s not all bad. For many, January represents a fresh start, new, better versions of themselves, a new beginning, and new attitudes.

At the end of the day, January is just one month in the grand tapestry of the year, and with the right mindset, you can make it a positive and fulfilling time.
